The correct identification of bird species is essential in any attempt to determine rarity or abundance of birds. To this end I draw your attention to Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania, by Dale Zimmermann et al. A colleague has, on this forum isolated the case of Mwalangalanga as a rare bird. it is quite difficult to ascertain this, as there are numerous species of sunbirds, which are all loosely referred to as mwalangalanga ( see Zimmermann et al). A good guide book and a good pair of binoculars are essential basic equipment to any aspiring birder. There are local bird-watching interest groups in Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa, where one can learn the basics of birding at very modest cost.

Indeed there are rare birds in Taita, such as the Taita Falcon and Taita white-eye.

Cheers

Zaidi

I feared both of them as a child. Anyway, it is true that Taita birds have lost their habitat and are unable to reproduce as before. That's me alright! I decided to come out of the shadows.......I saw this old pic in one of my posts.

That falcon was really scary for a girl in a compound full of chickens. Luckily the chicken always alerted us when they saw it patched on a tree across the valley. It was as if we had to share those chicken.........we had no choice :!:
